Germany's market for pet food grew slightly in 2010 compared to 2009, rising 0.8% to € 2.777 billion (US$3.93 billion).
The strongest growth in 2010 was in the market for cat food, which increased 2.9% to € 1.435 billion (US$2.03 billion). Total sales of dog food increased 0.1% from 2009 to € 1.102 billion (US$1.56 billion) in 2010. The market for pet products also increased slightly from 2009, growing by 0.8% in 2010 to € 3.707 billion (US$5.25 billion).
Sales of small animal food declined 4.5% from 2009, to € 127 million (US$179.5 million); sales of food for caged birds fell 7% in 2010, to € 53 million (US$74.9 million); and sales of fish food fell 11.6%, to € 60 million (US$84.8 million) in 2010.
