Bosch Tiernahrung to acquire Harrison Pet Products

Bosch Tiernahrung will acquire Harrison Pet Products Inc. of Canada. Harrison Pet Products will continue to operate as a separate stand-alone Canadian company. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Former vice president of Harrison, Holly Morrell, will continue to operate the company as international managing director. Morrell will work with the existing distribution network and looks to grow within those countries with the added marketing and promotional strength of Bosch Tiernahrung as well as with the addition of new products and new segments.
Harrison’s Canadian recipes will be continued with the added benefit of the strong scientific and technical expertise of Bosch Tiernahrung. Harrison developed and built the brands Genesis, Chicopee and Titan, with distribution in more than 35 countries. In addition to the current distribution areas, there are aggressive plans in place to develop in countries yet untapped.
 Development opportunities in the bakery/treat segment will be an extension to Genesis, Chicopee and Titan’s dry and wet dog food, dry and wet cat food, extruded small animal food and cat litter products.

Freeze-dried pet foods show strongest sales growth

Pet owners who splurge on the freshest, healthiest food continue to spur sales growth at pet specialty retail outlets. According to new data from GfK’s point-of-sale panel in the US, freeze-dried products have shown the strongest sales growth at pet retail, but grain-free and other established categories remain “most valuable players” in this $7.6 billion market.
In the past year, pet specialty retail sales of freeze-dried dog and cat food have jumped 64%, from $25 million to $40 million. These figures do not include pet food products that combine kibble with freeze-dried pieces.
Grain-free also remains a powerhouse in terms of sales growth, posting a year-over-year rise of 25% and now accounting for $2.4 billion annually (dog and cat food only) at pet specialty. Over the past 12 months, there have been more than 1,500 new grain-free products introduced in the US for cats and dogs, compared with 1,280 the year before.
The natural category – which includes most grain-free, freeze-dried, and similar products – continues to dominate the pet specialty market, accounting for $5.2 billion in sales out of a total of $7.6 billion in total pet retail food sales. But non-natural still represents the remaining $2.4 billion in cat and dog food sales at pet specialty – roughly one-third of the market.
Other food categories (cat and dog only) posting notable growth at pet specialty retail include:
  • “Part freeze-dried” – sales surged 83% in May 2015 year over year
  • Frozen – sales rose 32%, from $52 million to $69 million
  • Dehydrated – saw 42% growth at the register
“Having a data-driven, nationwide perspective on the pet specialty marketplace is essential for retailers and manufacturers alike,” said GfK’s Maria Lange, business group director, POS tracking. “With a clear view of the market, stores can make smarter stocking and discounting decisions, and manufacturers can design products that truly meet the needs of today’s pets and pet owners. While the natural trend is still driving most pet food growth in the specialty retail channel, stakeholders need to find the right balance between ‘rookie’ categories – like frozen and freeze-dried – and proven ‘stars.’”
GfK’s POS tracking division uses the world’s largest retail network to track products and deliver market insights based on point-of-sale (POS) data for countries worldwide. The team can look at which channels are popular with retailers and manufacturers and why, as well as which retail trends are affecting the overall market.

Nestle Purina PetCare to purchase Merrick

Merrick Pet Care has signed an agreement for Nestle Purina PetCare Co. to purchase the company from its private equity owner, Swander Pace Capital. Terms were not disclosed.
With SuperZoo as the back drop, Merrick Founder Garth Merrick said, “I believe Nestlé Purina is the right company to take what I, along with others, have built to the next level. I’m proud my name will continue to be on the door as we remain committed to making the best food for the best pets ever.”
Merrick is one of the fastest-growing natural and organic pet food companies in the industry, and will continue to operate as an independent business with no planned changes to its management or operations.
Merrick has more than 350 employees located primarily in Hereford, Texas, USA; Amarillo, Texas, USA; and Evanston, Illinois, USA.
With this agreement, which is expected to close over the next several months, Merrick will be able to further build upon its record of providing pets with industry leading nutrition, quality and food safety, while taking advantage of new global resources and innovations.

Merrick offers a wide variety of USA-made dry and wet foods, as well as treats, that are available nationally at independent pet specialty stores, Petco, and online via select retailers. In April 2012, Merrick Pet Care Inc. acquired Castor & Pollux and its ORGANIX branded portfolio. These brands are available at PetSmart, natural grocery, and online via select retailers.
Merrick’s manufacturing facilities are Safe Quality Food Level III certified and in 2012, Merrick’s facilities became the world’s only known organic certified manufacturer for dry and canned food for pets under the USDA National Organic Program (NOP).

Petco to donate $25,000 to Coral Restoration Foundation

Petco will donate US$25,000 to Coral Restoration Foundation (CRF) to support its work to restore critically endangered coral reefs. The donation will help to protect and restore coral reefs throughout the Florida Keys.
“We know Petco is committed to building a better world for people and pets, and we’re proud to be a new recipient of the company’s support,” said Martha Roesler, chief development officer for CRF. “This generous donation will help our efforts to restore reefs that provide habitat for 25% of our planet’s aquatic life.”
Petco is an advocate for reef conservation and reef and marine life aquaculture initiatives. Today, most of the company’s freshwater fish and all of its marine corals are aquacultured, meaning they are captive-bred and not taken from the ocean’s reefs.
 “At Petco, we’re committed to responsible marine life practices and we’re proud to support the Coral Restoration Foundation,” said Marcie Whichard, Petco’s vice president of industry and public affairs. “We applaud the work CRF is doing to safeguard one of our planet's most precious resources -- our coral reefs.”

Mars sued over Greenies ‘#1 Vet Recommended’ claim

Netherlands-based Paragon Pet Products Europe B.V. has filed a lawsuit accusing Mars Inc. of deceiving and misleading dog owners with a claim that its Greenies dental chews are the “#1 Vet Recommended Dental Chew.”
Paragon says the claim is unsubstantiated and false. A footnote on the back panel of the packaging suggests that Greenies is not, in fact, recommended by most or even a plurality of veterinarians.
On July 20, the judge hearing the case in the Southern District of New York – Paul A. Engelmayer – granted Paragon’s application for an order directing Mars to produce “all substantiation (e.g., documents, reports, studies, data, emails, and so forth” for the claim, “#1 Vet Recommended Dental Chew.” A hearing has been set for July 28 to consider next steps – including Paragon’s request for preliminary injunctive relief against Mars.
Paragon manufactures and sells Whimzees dental chews in competition with Greenies dental chews. Paragon’s complaint seeks an injunction requiring Mars to halt further use of the “#1 Vet Recommended Dental Chew” claim, to offer refunds to deceived purchasers of Greenies dental chews, and to correct and abate prior false advertising statements, including by correction or recall of Greenies retail packaging which contains the “#1 Vet Recommended Dental Chew” claim. Paragon is also seeking monetary relief.
 The complaint is Paragon Pet Products Europe B.V. vs. Mars Inc.

Survey: Optimism high among pet retailers

 A new survey report, Future of the Pet Industry 2015, from Pet Product News, shows optimism among retailers is high, with most pet product retailers anticipating healthy sales growth in the next year, with premium pet food expected to be a high-growth area.
One in four stores anticipate sales being more than 10% higher in 2015 than in 2014, and 90% of stores expect sales to be the same as or better than last year.
The survey findings include:
  • Retailers expect the two biggest areas of growth over the next five years to be premium pet food and grooming and other services. Fifty-two percent of retailers anticipate selling more premium/custom food in the next five years.
  • 53% of retailers said food was their biggest-selling dog product.
  • 49% said food was their biggest-selling cat product.
  • 24% of stores now sell live animals compared with more than 40% five years ago.
  • More than half of all pet stores are now either owned or managed by a woman. And that proportion is growing because new businesses are even more likely to have a female in charge.
  • 57% of pet retailers sponsor or support rescue and shelter organizations and 24% host in-store adoption events.

RECALL: Nature’s Variety recalls Instinct Raw Chicken Formula

Dog food has potential to be contaminated with Salmonella

Nature’s Variety has announced a voluntary recall of its Instinct Raw Chicken Formula for dogs with a “Best By” date of 04/27/16 because these products may be contaminated with Salmonella. Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.
The affected products are limited to the Instinct Raw Chicken Formula Frozen Diets packaged in the following forms:
  • UPC# 769949611431 – Instinct Raw Chicken Formula Bites for Dogs 4 lb.; Best By 04/27/16
  • UPC# 769949611448 – Instinct Raw Chicken Formula Bites for Dogs 7 lb.; Best By 04/27/16
  • UPC# 769949611486 – Instinct Raw Chicken Formula Patties for Dogs 6 lb.; Best By 04/27/16
The “Best By” date is located on the back of the package below the seal. The affected product was distributed through retail stores in the United States and limited distribution in Canada. No other Nature’s Variety products are affected.
No illnesses have been reported to date. Even though no illnesses have been reported, consumers should follow the Simple Handling Tips published on the Nature’s Variety package when disposing of the affected product.
Nature’s Variety became aware of a potential issue after receiving notification from the FDA that a routine surveillance sample of seven pound Instinct Raw Chicken Bites for dogs tested positive for Salmonella.
Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their health care providers.
Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has the symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.
Consumers feeding the affected product should discontinue use and monitor their pet’s health, and contact their veterinarian if they have concerns. Consumers who have purchased one of the above products can obtain a full refund or exchange by either returning the product in its original packaging or bringing a proof of purchase back to their retailer.

RECALL: Bravo recalls select chicken pet foods due to Salmonella

Bravo Pet Foods is recalling select lots of chicken pet dog and cat foods due to the potential that these pet food products may be contaminated with Salmonella. The pet food recall was initiated after routine testing by the New York, USA, State Department of Agriculture found the presence of Salmonella spp. Poly A contamination.
The following product is being voluntarily recalled because of the possible presence of Salmonella:
  • Bravo Blend Chicken diet for dogs and cats - 2 lb. chub/ item # 21-102/ "Best used by 12-05-16"/ UPC 829546211028
A total of 105 cases of the Bravo Blend Chicken diet product were sold to distributors, retail stores, internet retailers and directly to consumers in the US. 
The following products did not test positive for Salmonella, but are also being voluntarily recalled out of caution because the products were manufactured in the same facility, on the same day, as the product that tested positive:

Poland’s Pupil Foods to launch new pet food plant

Polish pet food producer Pupil Foods Ltd. is carrying out an investment to set up a new production facility in Odolanów, in Poland’s western region of Wielkopolska.

Under the plan, the factory will make dry pet food. The company has announced the project is nearing completion, and under the plan, the plant is to open in the second half of 2015.

Pupil Foods' portfolio includes a wide range of wet and dry pet food for cats and dogs. These include its Roksy, Pupil, Teo, Basic Line, Blubo and Canis product lines, according to data from the manufacturer.

The Polish producer is aiming to benefit from the rapid growth of Poland’s pet food market, as indicated by data from market research firm Euromonitor International. In 2014, Polish pet food sales increased by 9%, and they are to rise by a further 5% to a total of PLN 2.3 billion (US$613 million) this year.

In addition to the domestic market, the manufacturer will also sell the plant’s output to various foreign markets in Central and Eastern Europe. Its export destinations include the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.

The Polish firm was set up in 1999 and is based in Nowe Skalmierzyce, in the country's western part. Pupil Foods says its production facilities are BRC, IFS, HACCP and ISO 9001 certified. The company’s predecessor, Pupil Ltd., entered the country’s pet food market in 1996.

Since its establishment, Pupil Foods has expanded its output capacity with the launch of a dry pet food production facility in Niedon in 2009, and the opening of an additional wet pet food production line at the plant in Nowe Skalmierzyce, which doubled the firm’s output capacity in August 2012.

Blue Buffalo stocks surge on first day of trading

Company raises $677 million in initial public offering

Shares of Blue Buffalo surged 35% above their initial price on the first day of trading, raising $677 million in its initial public offering.
Blue Buffalo, listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market under the symbol BUFF, gained 36% to $27.20 at the close. At that level, the company is being valued at $5.3 billion.
Existing shareholders sold 33.8 million shares for $20 per share. They initially offered 29.5 million for $16-$18 each.
Blue Buffalo says it will issue up to 35,934 shares to about 1,700 non-management employees at no cost to them.
Blue Buffalo’s IPO was the year’s fifth largest. The only other consumer-facing company that had a bigger IPO was Fitbit, which makes wearable fitness trackers.
When it announced its filing for an IPO, analysts estimated the company could raise to up $500 million.

Purina ONE to host Cat Camp pop-up event

Purina ONE has found the way to improve the active, energetic fun of summer camp: add cats. The first-ever Cat Camp will include camp-themed activities designed to bring cat lovers together to experience what whole body health means for cats.

SuperZoo opens with leadership keynote, new products showcase

SuperZoo 2015, which opened on July 21, 2015, started off on a strong leadership note with its keynote speaker, Keni Thomas, country singer, motivational speaker and US Army Rangers veteran of the “Black Hawk Down” mission.

SuperZoo special keynote speaker Keni Thomas discusses the role of leadership on and off the battlefield.
Thomas, who detailed his part in the special operations mission recounted in the movie “Black Hawk Down,” stressed three key tenets for success in any area of life: planning, training and leadership. While highlighting these aspects in his fellow Rangers through his storytelling, Thomas explained how the strengths the Rangers instilled in him have colored his life since that mission—and how anyone can apply those same lessons to benefit their business and their life overall.
“If you want a good company, have good standards. If you want a great company, have exceedingly high standards,” said Thomas during his talk. Those standards begin with a plan. “If you fail to make a plan, plan on failing,” he said. Once plans are in place, training must inevitably follow. The military has a saying, “train as you fight, fight as you train,” said Thomas, and the same concept applies to the business world. Everyone in the company must know their role, and know it well. Further, everyone should be confident not only in their own expertise, but in the expertise of those they work with. Once plans and training are in place, the final, and perhaps most important, cog in the wheel can be set: leadership. True leadership, said Thomas, is everyone knowing their job and leading in their own expertise. Leadership at every level, according to Thomas, is what breeds success—both individually and for a company.
“We’re only as good as our weakest link,” said Thomas, who expanded by saying that all the training in the world won’t mean anything if each person isn’t striving for excellence in all that they do and taking responsibility for their roles. He ended on a more individual note, applying business strategy to personal lives. “Own up to your gifts,” he said. “You always have the ability to change lives.”

SuperZoo 2015 has a sold-out floor plan with 983 exhibiting companies filling 2,170 booths, as well as several education and networking opportunities throughout the show. The tradeshow goes through July 23.

Another chance to attend New Petfood Innovation Workshop

Representatives from Petfood Industry magazine have announced that, due to high demand, another Petfood Innovation Workshop: Next Generation Treats event featuring an increased emphasis on providing a hands-on experience will be held this fall on October 28-30, 2015, in collaboration with Kansas State University’s “Pet Food Experience.” The Pet Food Experience is hosted by the Kansas State Pet Food Program Team on the university’s main campus in Manhattan, Kansas, USA, and utilizes facilities within the community.
The multi-day event is a joint industry-academic venture to promote research, innovation and talent development focused on pet food and pet treat manufacturing. At these two cooperative events attendees can expect two days of academic research presentations combined with the hands-on creation of new types of pet treats in the workshop sessions, several networking opportunities and facility tours.
The Petfood Innovation Workshop is expected to sell-out again and will include the full Pet Food Experience agenda. Space is limited for the hands-on Workshop to the first 100 registrants. The Kansas State Pet Food Experience will also be available as a separate registration, and promises to have additional capacity. Registration and more event details are due to be released in August.
The premiere Petfood Innovation Workshop: Next Generation Treats held April 27, 2015, was the one-day opener for the Petfood Forum 2015 conference and exhibition, with a new hands-on format that spurred registrations to hit maximum capacity months in advance. Registrants were transported to the Kansas State-Olathe Food Innovation Accelerator Lab where they rotated among six different stations and engaged in making different types of pet treats to take home.
“The Petfood Forum team was looking for an opportunity to allow more people to participate in the Innovation Workshop that were previously excluded due to being sold out,” said Debbie Phillips Donaldson, Editor-in-Chief of Petfood Industry. “Our new partnership with the Kansas State Pet Food Program gives us that chance, and also lets us improve it with even more hands-on concepts, plus add new content by showcasing the research activities, facilities and students from the university.”
 The Pet Food Program at Kansas State University was started in 2012 and has established degree programs, short courses, and research concerning pet food and nutrition. Kansas State University is a public teaching and research institution founded in 1863 and located in Manhattan, Kansas, USA.

RECALL: Natural Dog Co. recalls Tremenda Sticks

Pet chews have potential to be contaminated with Salmonella

The Natural Dog Co. Inc. of Windsor, Colorado, USA, is recalling its 12oz bags of 12" Tremenda Sticks pet chews because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.
The recalled 12" Tremenda Sticks were distributed to retail stores in California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Missouri, Montana, North Carolina, Ohio, Utah and Washington.
The recalled product comes in a 12oz bag without a lot number or expiration date with UPC number 851265004957. Products with new packaging, which includes a lot number and expiration date but the same UPC are not affected by this recall.
No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.
The potential for contamination was noted after a Colorado Department of Agriculture inspection of the product revealed the presence of Salmonella in a sample taken from a 12oz package of 12" Tremenda Sticks.
Production of the product has been suspended while FDA and the company continue their investigation as to the source of the problem.
Salmonella can affect animals eating the product and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.

One Dog Organic Bakery donates 100 bags of treats in May

One Dog Organic Bakery L.L.C. (ODOB) donated more than 100 bags of treats to its rescue partner of the month, bringing total treats donated to more than 200 pounds. The donations during May marks a new record for ODOB.
ODOB owner Veronica Glynn recognized an opportunity to share her love for rescued dogs and her passion for safe, nutritious dog food to help minimize some of this financial burden faced by rescue groups and shelters.
“Both of our pups have been rescued and I estimate that 80% of my customers have rescued their fur family. We believe that all dogs should have access to safe and nutritious food. Feeding your dog something so small as a treat shouldn’t be a life or death decision,” Glynn said.
In February 2015, ODOB launched its K9 Rescue Outreach campaign and had its first rescue signed up less 24 hours later. Scheduling already into April 2016, the program provides much more than safe food to its rescue partners. Every month, ODOB features a Rescue Spotlight on its weekly blog about those who have dedicated their lives to rescuing animals.

1,000 exhibitors expected at 2015 CIPS

More than 850 companies have registered for the China International Pet Show (CIPS) on September 4-7, 2015, and 1,000 exhibitors in total are expected to attend.
The 19th edition of CIPS will be the first time it has been held in Shanghai, at the newly constructed National Exhibition and Convention Center (NECC). This ultramodern exhibition complex is centrally located in the Hongqiao commercial district and enjoys a direct connection to Shanghai’s city airport.
CIPS is an important gateway to the entire Asian market, and alongside familiar Chinese industry heavyweights such as CATIDEA and Wanpy the exhibitors will include a wealth of international companies from countries such as Italy, Portugal, Turkey and the US.
“To develop a global market presence, CIPS is an important event alongside the established trade fairs in Europe. At the same time, it represents a particularly effective opportunity for us to test the sales potential of the growing Chinese market and serve our existing customer base throughout Asia and Australia,” said Adrian Bartlett of UK firm Doggequin.
The GlobalPets Forum Asia will also offer an opportunity for international networking this year. Report: Italy’s pet food market grew 2.4% in 2014

Italy’s pet food market grew 2.4% in 2014, which closed with a turnover of EUR1,830 million (US$2,040 million), with sales of 544,000 tons of food products for dogs and cats, the main segment, according to data published in the 2015 Assalco-Zoomark Report.
The report was presented at the recent four-day Zoomark International event held in Bologna, Italy.
“This year’s event was an important one,” said Duccio Campagnoli, president of BolognaFiere, the company that manages the event. It “boosted networking opportunities for trade professionals from all over the world and confirmed the verve and entrepreneurial flair of this very innovative sector, where research and development have been focusing on issues like environmental sustainability, energy saving and quality, now a key element in production processes. And these values meet with the approval of informed consumers who want to see sustainable usage of resources, and for whom quality and safety are a priority when shopping for their pets.”
The event featured 615 exhibitors from 35 countries. Among other things, the event offered a host of training and refresher opportunities for veterinarians, breeders and groomers, with four educational and scientific seminars organized by SCIVAC (the Italian Cultural Society for Pet Veterinarians), APT (Professional Groomers Association), ENCI (Italian National Kennel Club) and ANFI (Italian National Feline Association). Meetings and workshops explored topical issues for pet industry professionals: e-commerce, social media strategy, lifestyle marketing and much more, presented by CNA Bologna in collaboration with professionals from the communications sector.

Extrusion Porosification Technology pilot launches

Clextral, DIANA Pet Food, LIS (Lesaffre Ingrédients Services) and Triballat?Noyal have worked for several months on setting up an Extrusion Porosification Technology (EPT) pilot in Europe. This partnership will soon lead to the creation of a research and development line based in Western France (Cérences?Manche) in the premises of LIS.
EPT is a new drying technology and breakthrough innovation developed and patented by Clextral, a division of Groupe Legris Industries.
This process consists in producing new generation porous powders with improved functional properties (rehydration, flowability, etc.). The applications are extremely varied, and can range from powdered milk to instant coffee, with a wide variety of food ingredients. EPT is used to dry very viscous products and generates 20?40% energy savings compared to the conventional spray drying method.
This collaborative project brings major food industry names, such as DIANA Pet Food, LIS and Triballat?Noyal, together with Clextral. A new pilot will be set up offering the latest advances in a unique intensification technology which has the potential to revolutionize conventional drying methods.
 Starting in 2016, this pre?industrialization pilot line will also be available to other food manufacturers who will be able to perform new product development tests and improve dehydration processes through EPT technology.

Plato Pet Treats gives back with Plato Wags Back program

As part of its mission to provide health and safety for dogs through nutrition, California-based wholesome dog treat maker Plato Pet Treats has launched its first-ever Plato Wags Back program.
With the purchase of a bag of Plato Pet Treats, Plato will provide meaningful financial and product donations to rescues and shelters across the US to help ensure that dogs are treated with love until they find their forever home. Fresno Bully Rescue (FBR): A volunteer-based, nonprofit, no-kill shelter dedicated to rescuing Bully breed dogs in the Central Valley of Calif. Because of foreclosures in the state, an overwhelming amount of dogs are being surrendered and Bully breeds are typically the first to be euthanized if no one adopts or rescues them. Plato Wags Back will support FBR’s spay and neuter program. An organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing of Labrador retrievers and their “friends” in the greater Los Angeles area. Aller Petfood’s Turkish division declares bankruptcy

Aller Petfood will leave the Turkish market as a producer after the bankruptcy of its Turkish division.
Aller Petfood entered the Turkish market in 2014 and became the first international pet food producer in the market. Aller Petfood entered into a contract with Petfood to rent its factory, and take over the trading of its brands and service of its existing customers. The contract with the largest of the customers was through Petfood’s holding company, Amazon.
According to a report, Amazon began to hold back all payment to Aller Petfood from its client, putting severe strain on Aller Petfood’s Turkish division and draining the division’s cash flow. The division was forced to stop deliveries to Amazon, and ultimately declare the Turkish division bankrupt.
“This is in no way the plan we had when entering the Turkish pet food market,” said Henriette Bylling, Aller Petfood Group’s CEO. “The situation was out of our hands and we sincerely apologize for all inconveniences caused to our business partner. We still strongly believe in the Turkish pet food market and will continue servicing it from our other division.”
 Aller Petfood says it will take any necessary legal actions related to the situation.

Petfood Forum Asia 2016 is seeking noncommercial abstracts for oral presentations focused on new research or information. Petfood Forum Asia 2016 is scheduled for 30 March, 2016, at the Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Centre, in conjunction with Victam Asia 2016. This will be the fifth edition of Petfood Forum Asia; past editions of this exclusive, one-day conference have attracted pet food professionals from throughout Southeast Asia, as well as other regions of the world.

Three Dog Bakery receives BRC certification

Three Dog Bakery recently received BRC certification, a management scheme recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) board.
BRC certification indicates that the company’s manufacturing meets internationally recognized food safety standards.
GFSI was created to provide leadership and guidance on food safety management systems for the food supply chain. BRC is a leading safety and quality certification program for food manufacturing, packaging, storage and distribution, and is used by more than 22,000 certified suppliers in 123 countries. GFSI objectives include:
  • Reducing food safety risks by delivering equivalence and convergence between effective food safety management systems.
  • Aiding cost management in the global food system by eliminating redundancy and improving operational efficiency, developing competencies and capacity building in food safety to create consistent and effective global food systems
  • Providing a unique international stakeholder platform for collaboration, knowledge exchange and networking
Since earning the certification, Three Dog Bakery has resumed in-house production for several previously co-packed treats, begun private label production for current customers and earned new international business in the UK with Pets at Home.

BRC publishes new global standard for packaging

BRC has published a revised global standard for packaging and packaging materials.
The standard now provides a framework for all types of packaging manufacturers to assist them in the production of safe packaging materials and to manage product quality to meet customers’ requirements. Certification against the standard is recognized by many brand owners, retailers, food service companies and manufacturers around the world when assessing the capabilities of their suppliers. In response to demand, the standard has been translated into many languages to facilitate implementation by packaging materials companies across the world.
The standard has been developed to specify the product safety, quality and operational criteria that must be in place within a packaging manufacturing organization in order for it to fulfil its obligations with regard to legal compliance and protection of the consumer. The format is designed to allow a company’s premises, operational systems and procedures to be assessed against the requirements of the standard by a competent third party – the certification body.
What’s new in Issue 5?
The development of Issue 5 came after a wide consultation to understand stakeholders’ requirements. A review of emerging issues was also carried out in the packaging industry and the industries it supplies. The information has been developed and reviewed by a working group composed of stakeholders representing different sectors of the packaging materials manufacturing industry, retailers, brand owners, certification bodies and independent technical experts.
The focus for Issue 5 is:
  • A move from “good practice” to “best practice”
  • The quality management systems process in printed packaging controls
  • Continuing to ensure consistency of the audit process
  • Providing a standard that meets retailers’ and brand owners’ needs to reduce the audit burden
  • Better recognition of the diversity of the packaging industry and its customers’ demands
  • Encouraging greater transparency and traceability in the supply chain
  • Encouraging adoption of the standard as a means of improving product safety at small sites and facilities where processes are still in development
The requirements of Issue 5 have evolved from those of previous issues. There continues to be an emphasis on management commitment, a hazard and risk analysis-based product safety program and a supporting quality management system. The objective has been to direct the focus of the audit towards the implementation of good manufacturing practices within the production areas while recognizing the diversity and breadth of the packaging industry, and the skills required to audit it.
Joanna Griffiths, BRC global standards technical manager, said: “The development of Issue 5 has been based on the values of the previous issues while ensuring that the update reflects the latest best practices. The consultation with the users of the standard set the main focus for the rewrite which was to reduce the need for multiple audits and encourage consistency of the audit process; we believe the working groups have achieved this aim.”
 The BRC Global Standard for Packaging and Packaging Materials Issue 5 will be available on BRC Participate, along with the interpretation guideline and additional supporting publications. Merrick’s teams up with K9s For Warriors

K9s For Warriors and Merrick Pet Care are joining together to help American military veterans and shelter dogs. Merrick’s support will aid K9s For Warriors’ mission of pairing specially trained rescue dogs with veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disability (PTSD) and/or traumatic brain injury (TBI), helping them readjust to civilian life.

Organizers mark successful FIAAP/VICTAM/GRAPAS event

Global industry executives from the animal feed, flour and rice milling, grain processing and biomass pelleting industries recently descended on Cologne, Germany, for the FIAAP/VICTAM/GRAPAS International exhibition and conferences.
Thousands of visitors from every continent, and 276 exhibitors attended.
At the end of the first show day, the winners of the three different innovation awards were announced. They are as follows:
  • The GRAPAS Awards organized by trade magazine Milling and Grain had joint winners: Alapala, Turkey and Buhler AG, Switzerland.
  • The Aquafeed Innovation Award organized by was won by Tovalia Intelscan, France.
  • The FIAAP Animal Nutrition Award organized by trade magazine AllAboutFeed was won by Adifo, Belgium.
The following conferences were held during the show: the FIAAP Conference, Aquafeed Horizons, AEBIOM Pellet Workshop, Petfood Forum Europe 2015, GMP+International Feed Safety Assurance certificate, the IFF Feed Conference and the Global Milling Conference with GRAPAS International 2015.
For the first time ever, FEFAC (the European Feed Manufacturers Federation) held its Annual General Meeting during the event and their members joined the exhibition as well.
Additionally, Victam arranged for free tours to the Vitelia feed mill and the newly opened Feed Design Lab in the Netherlands. These proved very popular with the visitors.
Victam celebrated its 50th anniversary with a celebration dinner and entertainment for 500 guests at the Flora and botanical gardens in Cologne.
Henk van de Bunt, the general manager of Victam International BV, announced that Victam, in conjunction with some of their conference organizers, will shortly be launching a new venture. They will organize a series of industry conferences at a venue near Cologne in summer 2017. There will also be an additional area where companies will be able to have tabletop exhibits.
Van de Bunt also announced that FIAAP, VICTAM & GRAPAS Asia 2016 will take place March 29-31, 2016, in Bangkok, Thailand. It will once again be held at the Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Centre (BITEC). More than half of the available exhibition space for the show is already reserved.
Victam will also celebrate its 25th year since it first organized a show in South East Asia.
The exhibitions and conferences will cover animal feed ingredients and additives, aqua feed ingredients and production, biomass pelleting technology, pet food ingredients and production and flour and rice milling and grain processing.
There will be the 2nd meeting of the ASEAN Feed Associations as well as the 2nd edition of the ASEAN Feed & Rice Symposium. These will bring together members of the milling associations from throughout Asia with acknowledged industry experts.
Van de Bunt also said there will be some changes within the Victam organization. New members will be appointed to the Board from within the feed, flour and grain industries. This will bring new ideas and experience to its Board.
 Van de Bunt also announced that he will retire as from the Board July 1, 2016. He will, however, still be the general manager for the next event in Bangkok. It is the intention of the Board to appoint a new general manager to succeed him and that hopefully either he or she will be in Bangkok for the next show and will be introduced to the industry.

Interzoo set for growth in 2016

Professionals from the international pet sector will gather once again in Nuremberg, Germany, from May 26-29, 2016, to attend Interzoo, the world’s biggest trade fair for pet supplies. The initial registration period has already flagged a positive growth trend.
“On the whole, registrations are significantly higher than in the comparable period before the last fair,” said Hans-Jochen Büngener, chairman of the Interzoo Exhibition Committee. Herbert Bollhöfer, managing director of Interzoo organizer WZF (Wirtschaftsgemeinschaft Zoologischer Fachbetriebe GmbH, a service company for the pet industry), is also feeling confident: “We are seeing continuity in the proportion of German and international exhibitors, while the number of stand inquiries confirms Interzoo’s status as the world’s number one trade fair for the pet industry.”
According to Bollhöfer, the NürnbergMesse project team is dealing with requests for specific stand locations and larger exhibition spaces from regular exhibitors and working out the logistics of where to place the stands of new participants. A somewhat larger exhibition area has been planned for Interzoo 2016. The Chinese pavilion will probably be accommodated compactly in halls 8 and 10. Thirteen halls will be available to Interzoo 2016.
Interzoo Summit 2016 offers more interaction
Interzoo is also investing in a supporting program that facilitates networking away from the hustle and bustle of the exhibition. On May 25, 2016, a day before the opening of Interzoo, the international forum for exhibitors and retail company managers from the sector will take place for the second time. The theme of this summit, “The Pet Market of Tomorrow,” will explore the latest findings on digitization, mega trends and new retail infrastructures and the resulting implications for the pet industry.
 As well as high-caliber presentations, delegates can also look forward to a half-day workshop: “The basic idea of this workshop is that participants reflect on the content of the preceding presentations in small groups, learn from one another and collaborate to devise solutions for the future of companies operating in the sector and the industry as such," said Antje Schreiber, communications and project manager at WZF. A further positive spinoff is that this will allow many participants to get to know one another personally in the course of professional-level dialogues.

Purina pushes for more pets at work

More than 17 years ago, Nestlé Purina started encouraging its associates to bring their pets to work, and the program has provided many benefits for employees and their pets through the years. This year, the company celebrated national Take Your Dog to Work Day by encouraging other companies to join them in this movement and start their own pets-at-work policies.
“At Purina, we believe that pets and people are better together – whether at home or at work,” said Dr. Kurt Venator, a Purina veterinarian. “As pet lovers and owners, we are passionate about the Pets at Work movement and encourage our associates to bring their pets to work every day so they can experience the benefits, including exercise from a dog walk during lunch break or having a calming companion nearby during stressful times. This is why we see hundreds of pets at our St. Louis campus every week.”
Studies show that employees who bring pets to work have fewer signs of stress. To get a better understanding of how people felt about pets in the workplace, Purina partnered with the Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine to conduct a U.S. survey in June 2015 and found among 750 respondents:
  • Almost two out of three employees agree pets should be allowed in the workplace if there is a general consensus among employees
  • 85% of employees of companies with pets in the office say that pets-at-work policies are beneficial
  • 72% of employees said their jobs do not allow pets in the workplace
  • More than half of those who want pets allowed in the office are willing to spearhead efforts to make their workplaces pet friendly 
The 750 respondents include pet owners and non-pet owners, as well as people who can take their pets to work and those who cannot.
“The relationship humans and animals share is dynamic and, over the years, it has been shown that the bond can be beneficial to the well-being of both,” said Dr. Sharon Fooshee Grace, clinical professor at the Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine. “Through this survey, we now have a real opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the human-animal bond and how to maximize the potential of the special relationships shared between people and pets.”
Purina is calling for other employers to join the Pets at Work movement by asking companies to pledge their intent to implement their own pets at work program. The company has developed resources to help other companies become more pet friendly, including an Employer Toolkit with tips and documents to help employers implement a pets at work program. The toolkit includes an etiquette guide, office checklist and an authorization and release form, among other helpful resources.
Purina has also provided pet lovers with their own Employee Toolkit to help encourage facility managers and employers to embrace pets in the workplace and recognize the positive impacts it can have on employees and the overall business. Employees can get access to tips, articles, printable guidelines and a petition to help make their workplace pet friendly.
 “Having pets walking through our offices every day makes for a warmer, friendlier environment at Purina, and we believe it helps with our productivity,” Dr. Venator said. “We realize it won’t work for every company and every pet owner, but we encourage other companies to try it and see for themselves how bringing pets to work can be a real benefit – for pets and their owners.”

Tuffy’s Pet Foods opens new manufacturing facility

Tuffy’s Pet Foods Inc., of Perham, Minnesota, USA, has opened a new, 130,000-square-foot state-of-the-art manufacturing facility. Tuffy’s is scheduled to commission the new facility on August 19, 2015, with a formal opening celebration to be conducted that afternoon.
The $70 million facility has been purpose built from the ground up to provide the safest environment for food safety, efficiency and flexibility. The facility is designed to meet and exceed the expectations of its customers and the stringent requirements of the pet food market. This has been accomplished by combining the most technologically advanced equipment with complete process segregation. The facility expansion comprises more than 180,000 square feet of production and warehouse space to accommodate Tuffy’s rapid growth.
Production capacity in the new facility will increase in excess of 50% over the original facility with planned expansion capabilities for additional growth. The original facility will be converted to warehouse space and an expansion of soft moist treat capacity.
Tuffy’s has been producing dry dog and cat food kibble for more than 50 years. Tuffy’s produces kibble for its own National Brand offerings NutriSource, Pure Vita and Natural Planet as well as numerous co-manufactured products.

Mars to donate food to kitten rescued at plant

Mars Petcare will donate a one-year supply of Sheba, Iams and Temptations treats to the new adoptive owner of a kitten that was rescued after it hitched a ride under the truck that belongs to an employee of the Mars plant in Hackettstown, New Jersey, USA.
The orange and white tabby kitten reportedly traveled 28 miles inside the engine compartment of a pickup truck from East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania to the Mars chocolate plant when the truck’s owner went to work. The three-to-four-month-old kitten survived the ride without injury.
Police and employees of the Hackettstown Department of Public Works and Mars helped free the kitten, who ran a short distance before he was caught.
 If no one claims ownership of the kitten by July 10, it will be put up for adoption. Dozens of interested adopters have called the shelter where the kitten is being held.

Survey: 37% interested in raw pet food diets

Allprovide, the all-natural raw pet food company, conducted a survey of 1,826 cat and dog owners across the United States on their pet food preferences, knowledge and interests. The results show that more than 37% of pet owners are interested in a fresh, healthy raw food diet for their pets.
“These statistics demonstrate what we’ve been hearing from pet owners across the country,” said Michael McVay, co-founder of Allprovide. “The more people learn about the risks of feeding pets processed foods and the more they see the health benefits of a fresh, raw food diet, the more eager they are to switch.”
The full results of the study include:
  • Thirty-three percent would be interested in feeding their pets a fresh, raw food diet.
  • Forty-six percent said they hadn’t heard of the raw pet food diet prior to the survey.
  • Thirteen percent of those surveyed already feed their pets raw food.
  • Pet health is the No. 1 factor (94%) for consumers when choosing their pet’s food.
  • Freshness and quality (89%) are the second motivating factors for purchase.
  • Cost is the third consumer consideration (65%) in purchase.
  • Eighty-nine percent of pet parents feed their pets processed foods and fillers.
  • Twenty-three percent of those who feed their pets processed foods report their pets suffer from skin problems, arthritis, kidney problems or food allergies.
  • The same number of respondents (23%) report that their veterinarians have suggested a change in diet to treat those illnesses.
  • Thirty-three percent would prefer to have their pet food delivered on a regular schedule, as opposed to buying it in-store.
  • Fifty-five percent would prefer to give their pets fresh food that can be served naturally or cooked.
 The anonymous survey was conducted with 1,826 cat and dog owners who identify themselves as “health conscious.”

RECALL: Stella & Chewy’s issues recall after Listeria detection

Stella & Chewy’s is recalling some of its products because a routine test found Listeria in a sample of its freeze-dried patties for dogs.
On its website, the company says that it was notified on July 2 by the Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) that it issued a stop sale order on a single lot of Chewy’s Chicken Freeze-Dried Dinner Patties for Dogs, 15 oz. bags (Lot #111-15) because MDA detected Listeria monocytogenes in the product.
As a precautionary measure, the company says it is voluntarily recalling all products from Lot #111-15, as well as a number of products that may have been exposed to the affected lot.

RECALL: Boulder Dog Food recalls Turkey Sprinkles

Boulder Dog Food Company L.L.C. is voluntarily recalling some of its Turkey Sprinkles because the product has the potential of being contaminated with Salmonella.
This voluntary recall is regarding Turkey Sprinkles 3 oz. with a "Best By" date of 05/18/16, 05/28/2016 and 05/30/2016, a Lot Number of 743, and a UPC Code of 899883001224. The product is in a clear poly bag. The UPC Code is located in the lower right hand corner of the product label on the front of the bag. The "Best By" date and Lot Number are a label on the back of the bag in the center.
The recalled product consists of 7 bags that were distributed to one retail customer in Colorado and one retail customer in Virginia. Boulder Dog Food Company has identified and notified the customers to whom the recalled product was sent. If you are in possession of the recalled product, discontinue use and return the unused product to either the retailer where it was purchased or directly to Boulder Dog Food Company.
The recall is a result of a routine sampling program by the Food and Drug Administration which revealed a positive test for Salmonella in the product. One complaint was received from a consumer who had contact with the product.
This recall comes after the company recently voluntarily recalled some of its Chicken Sprinkles, also because the product has the potential of being contaminated with Salmonella. The previous recall was a result of a routine sampling program by the Colorado Department of Agriculture which revealed a positive test for Salmonella.
Salmonella can affect animals eating the product, and there is risk to humans who handle the product, especially if the handler does not thoroughly wash his or her hands after having contact with the product or any surfaces exposed to the product. Healthy people handling the product contaminated by Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Although rare, Salmonella may result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with the Product should contact their healthcare providers immediately.
Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the product and has exhibited these symptoms, you should contact your veterinarian immediately.

New report details Canadian pet markets trends

Strong pet food sales, continued humanization trends, and rising interest from pet owners in non-medical pet services all aligned in 2014 to produce a Canadian pet market with its highest growth in the past five years. A sluggish veterinary services category stood in stark contrast, with its continued decline in visits by pet owners. Study: Pet ownership can benefit older adults

Research published in Activities, Adaption & Aging calls for increased understanding about older adults, the relationship between pet ownership and health, and the current barriers which limit older adults’ chances to own a pet. The study, “Fostering the Human-Animal Bond for Older Adults,” goes into detail about physical and financial risks for older adult pet ownership and how it can be diminished.
Medical problems that arise with older adults, such as physical illness and emotional issues, have the potential to be mitigated by companionship of pets because it reduces social isolation and enhances physical activity. But illnesses that are often associated with aging, ranging from arthritis to diabetes, make it hard or impossible for older adults to provide routine care for their pets. Financial barriers are another issue that older pet owners face.
In the article, the researchers describe these common issues affecting older adults, particularly those living alone. They tell a story about Janet, a 75-year old obese woman who has diabetes and arthritis, but really wants a cat for company. Though she described herself as a “cat lady,” she worries about the monetary investment and the fate of the feline should she fall ill or pass away.
When asked about what sparked the study, author Keith Anderson from the University of Montana commented “As a geriatric social work researcher, I’ve always been interested in finding creative, cost effective ways to improve the lives and well-being of older adults … My co-authors direct the Veterinary Outreach Program, affiliated with The Ohio State University, which provides mobile wellness care for the pets of older adults and/or homebound residents. Our interests overlapped and we began to discuss ways in which we could link pets in shelters with older adults who may benefit from pet ownership.”
The study was funded by the WALTHAM Foundation.
The researchers found that programs are beginning to arise to overcome these obstacles. “Programs are emerging that facilitate the adoption of pets by older adults. These programs match older adults with adult shelter animals and provide support throughout the adoption and ownership processes.” Unfortunately, there are some drawbacks that these programs need to overcome, but the authors seem hopeful about finding potential solutions: “Lower-income older adults often live in buildings where there are fees and deposits associated with owning pets. We need creative solutions to address these financial barriers.”
 “Future researchers should continue to explore the human-animal bond for older adult populations, particularly for those with cognitive, physical, and financial limitations. There is so much potential benefit here for both pets and potential pet owners” wrote the research team.
