Paw4mance Pet Products offers new holistic dog, cat food line

Paw4mance Pet Products International Inc. added the new MOJO brand of pet food to its line of Paw4mance natural and holistic dog food, cat food and treats.
MOJO is specially formulated to meet Association of American Feed Control Officials guidelines for the United States and international markets, the company says. The line is available in three recipes: Original Dog recipe, chicken and rice formula; Platinum recipe, lamb and rice formula; and Elite recipe, fish and rice formula. The company says all of its formulas are free of wheat, wheat gluten and corn, and contain no artificial flavors, colors or chemical preservatives.

Dr. Harvey's launches natural petfood, pet products video series

Dr. Harvey's holistic pet food company launched a YouTube video series on pet health, as well as the importance of feeding an all-natural pet food diet and using chemical-free pet products.
These videos, which appear on Dr. Harvey's pet food website and on the company's YouTube channel, highlight the company's holistic pet product benefits and the philosophy behind them. The videos include a step-by-step guide on making fresh homemade dog food, along with real pet owners who feed Dr. Harvey's pet food to their pets.

Holistic pet food company uses colorful packaging for dog food line

Holistic pet food maker Infinia recently introduced its Holistic Dog Food line, with colorful packaging to convey the food's quality to consumers, according to the packaging designer.
The dog food line is available in recipes such as Turkey & Sweet Potato, Chicken & Brown Rice, and Bison & Potato. 
"The opportunity with this project was to design an ultra-premium line of pet food that nurtures mind, body and relationship with holistic nutrition. The branding, packaging and point-of-sale materials were created with an artful flair that conveyed richness in ingredients while delivering top-quality nutrition for its customers," said packaging designer, Andrew Pautler, of McCord Design Group. "The Infinia brand was successfully launched through independent retailers eager to stock the new ultra-premium line of pet food. The package design and shelf merchandising systems; as well as retail communication materials all worked together to help launch the contemporary new brand that has been widely accepted by owners and their pets."

Petco becomes first US chain retailer to offer Holistic Select petfood

Petco announced it will become the first and only national retailer to sell Holistic Select pet food at its retail stores.
Previously, Holistic Select was only sold in pet specialty stores, but it will now be available in all Petco and Unleashed by Petco stores. The petfood line includes dry food, canned food and snacks, for both cats and dogs.
In addition, Holistic Selects will partner with Petco at the following pet events in the United States: Love Your Pet Expo in Redding, California, on April 30; Dogwood Festival in Quincy, Illinois, on April 30; Pedigree in the Park in Charlotte, North Carolina, on April 30; PetsJam 2011 in Houston, Texas, on May 7; PetsJam 2011 in Austin, Texas, on May 14; Escondido Sreet Fair in Escondido, California, on May 15; Dog D'Alene in Couer D'Alene, Idaho, on May 15; Wag n Walk in Monterey, California, on May 15; The Great Rescue Roundup in Fort Worth, Texas, on May 21; and Do Dah Day in Birmingham, Alabama, on May 21.

Canidae pet foods launches new single grain protein food

Canidae Pet Foods announced it will begin shipping its newest product, Single Grain Protein Plus, to distributors in North America during the fourth quarter of this year.
Single Grain Protein Plus is the first product in Canidae's new line of natural and holistic petfoods. The company says the nutritional focus of its Single Grain Protein Plus is to offer 29% total protein from chicken, turkey, lamb and fish meals and restrict grains sources to a combination of brown and white rice.

'Natural' petfood may not be best, veterinarian says

"Natural" petfoods may not always be the best choice to feed to pets, according to veterinarian Susan Nelson of Kansas State University, in an article from UPI.com.
Nelson warned that cats and dogs do not have the same nutritional needs as humans, therefore "natural" petfoods with many fruits and vegetables may not meet all of a pet's nutritional requirements.
"Natural and veggie-based pet foods are based more on market demand from owners, not because they are necessarily better for the pet," Nelson said.
Nelson advised consumers to look for labels from the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), which sets minimum standards for the nutritional adequacy of diets. Consumers should be wary of any petfood company that claims to have organic or holistic food because these categories don't exist by AAFCO definition, according to Nelson.

Canine Caviar opens petfood superstore in New York

Holistic petfood manufacturer Canine Caviar opened its first healthy petfood superstore in New York.
The petfood store was created as a partnership between Jeff Baker, the nutritionist founder of Canine Caviar, and Gunnar Larson, of Virtu New York fitness apparel and NetworkGlobal.tv. The store will carry the complete Canine Caviar and Feline Caviar lines of dog and cat foods, treats, bones, chews and supplements. Dogs and cats are also welcome to visit the store.

Holistic Select shares puppy nutrition info

In recognition of National Puppy Day on March 23, Holistic Select staff veterinarian Dr. Al Townshend shared nutrition advice to new puppy owners.
Among his advice, Townshend recommended petfood supplemented with DHA to support the development of nervous tissue and visual function; advised owners to consider the nutritional needs of the pet’s breed; and discouraged the overuse of ‘people food’ as pet treats since they don’t meet pet’s nutritional needs.

Despite the fact that I am a petfood veteran I find it very difficult to understand what (w)holistic is.
I saw a few definitions of (w)holistic petfoods, but the conclusion for the layman can only be: “so this is a complete food!”
The Oxford Thesaurus (1990) doesn’t provide a synonym, whereas the Concise Oxford Dictionary provides two alternatives for (w)holism:
the theory that certain wholes are to be regarded as greater than the sum of their parts; this philisophical theory seems to be a bit far-fetched to sell a bag og dog or catfood!
However the 2nd alternative I found may provide a bit more grip:
the treating of the whole person including mental and social factors rather than just the symptoms of a disease. This clearly has a medical background!
To which extent this can and may apply to pet animals is not for me to judge, but the 2nd description certainly leads to some more questions:
