Spring Naturals dog food certified low glycemic, diabetic friendly

Performance Pet Products Spring Naturals whole grain and grain-free dry dinners have been certified low glycemic and diabetic friendly by the Glycemic Research Institute. The super-premium brand is the only made-in-the-US dog kibble to receive this accreditation, according to the company, due to its philosophy of using only real meat, poultry or fish as the #1 protein source rather than rendered meals.

Dry petfoods that use rendered meals require a binding agent that is high in simple carbohydrates and starches to hold the kibble together, which converts rapidly into glucose. A diet full of carbs and starches can be unhealthy for pets because the higher the carbs, the higher the glycemic index. Since Spring Naturals doesn't use meals, the brand's dry dinners are free of high-carbohydrate binding agents such as wheat, soy, tapioca, white rice, brown rice and potato starch.

Dynamite reports 112% increase in Ultimate Dog Food sales in 2010

Sales of Dynamite Ultimate Dog Food have increased 112% in 2010 compared to the first three quarters of 2009, claims Dynamite, the parent company.
Dynamite, based in Meridian, Idaho, USA, says it has also seen a 43% increase in the number of customers ordering the raw dog food. Ultimate Dog Food was introduced in 2007 as part of Dynamite’s efforts to find a natural dog food that does not trigger allergies and is suitable for dogs with diabetes, according to the company.

Dog owners may be putting pets at risk for diabetes

Many dog owners may be putting their pets at risk for diabetes by feeding them foods other than petfood, according to an article by San Antonio, Texas, USA news station KENS5.
“You would not believe what people feed their dogs,” said Dr. Ronald Walton of South Texas Veterinary Specialists. “My clients profess to giving their pets burgers, doughnuts, pizza, candy, even alcohol.”
Although any dog can develop diabetes at any age, Walton said the disease is breed-specific and mostly genetic. Female dogs, as well as Golden Retrievers, Keeshonds, German Shepherds, Poodles, miniature breeds, Schnauzer breeds, Terrier breeds and Basset Hounds are all predisposed to developing diabetes. Warning signs of diabetes in dogs include weight loss, frequent or uncontrollable urination and an increase in appetite and thirst.
Owners of diabetic dogs must test their dog’s blood sugar level twice daily, and if the levels are too high, they must wait and re-test until the level is right for an insulin shot. Dr. Walton said the number one cause for pet euthanasia is diabetes because treatment is such a commitment.
