Nestle has completed a new US$220 million pet food factory in Silao, Guanajuato, Mexico.
The new plant – the company’s 15th in Mexico – is part of the company’s US$1.03 billion four-year investment program for Mexico.
The Purina factory will produce 130,000 tonnes of dry pet food annually. A second, future phase could add a new production line for wet food. Forty percent of the plant’s current output will be exported to Central America and the Caribbean.
The plant will employ 200 people directly and another 1,000 indirectly. Nestle Executive Vice President Laurent Freixe said the factory would generate MXN750 million (US$43.4 million) annually.
Nestle Mexico’s CEO, Marcelo Melchior, predicted the new facility will allow Nestle to overtake Mars Mexico, its main competitor.
Mexico is the fourth leading producer of animal feed after China, the US and Brazil.

Geelen Counterflow signs on to Paris Pledge For Action
Geelen Counterflow has signed on to The Paris Pledge For Action.
The pledge is an initiative of the COP21 French Presidency. L’Appel de Paris, or The Paris Pledge for Action, brings together a multitude of voices on an unprecedented scale with a single, collective statement:
“We welcome the adoption of a new, universal climate agreement at COP 21 in Paris, which is a critical step on the path to solving climate change. We pledge our support to ensuring that the level of ambition set by the agreement is met or exceeded.”
Sander Geelen, managing director of Geelen Counterflow: “We have signed this pledge because man-made global warming is an urgent threat to the world we leave to our children and because the feed and food industry that we are active in can and must play an important role in solving this problem, as confirmed by the signing of this pledge by companies such as Mars, Nestlé, Unilever, Kellog, Arla, Danone, Coca Cola, DSM, BASF, Tesco, Carrefour, etc.”
“We must change course urgently. Our new energy-plus-office is an example of what is now possible. A much bigger challenge is to develop technology that helps our customers to reduce their ecological footprint. Every dryer we supply to the feed and food industry consumes on average the same amount of energy as 300-500 households. Most of the energy currently is from natural gas. We can have a major impact on the carbon footprint of the feed and food industry and we are determined to take that responsibility seriously.”

Rondo Food invests in new administration building
Krefeld company Rondo Food has constructed a new building on its premises. With this development, the company has re-established itself for the future, according to Rondo Food.
Administration departments and sales for the whole of the company group are located at the Krefeld site, and all the central functions such as purchasing, financial accounting and human resources converge at this site. “In the past, there wasn’t a free desk and our capacities were all utilized,” said Managing Director Dirk Wellen. “Our old 1970s building hadn’t been sufficient to meet the demands that the modern working day places on our staff for some time. There was also a need for modernization in several areas; for example, window insulation and the IT infrastructure."
The company has invested US$4 million in a new, modern administration building that was completed in August 2014. After a 10-month building phase, the three managing directors and all staff were able to move into the new building. In the new building there are only a few individual offices, allowing for more open-plan offices with zones for working together to realize more intensive communication and teamwork, according to the company.
The new administration wing has been constructed in front of the old building. In a second building phase the existing old building will be disassembled and a new two-story building will be built in its place. The new home for some members of staff, for example from the purchasing and sales services departments, will be in that new building. Additional social rooms will be constructed in the then available free areas. All of the departments closely linked with production, such as product development and quality assurance, that were previously located in a different area on the premises, are now under one roof. All building work should be completed in the spring of 2015.

Rondo Food celebrates 120th anniversary
Rondo Food is celebrating its 120th anniversary, as well as its 20th year as a manufacturer of pet snacks for dogs and cats.
The company started as a baking ingredients manufacturer, until 1994 when it expanded into the petfood segment. At that time, the impulse came from a long-term business partner, who was using a cooking extruder for the continual production of meat strips. This technology was bought and the company was given the name “Rondo Food," and then it began with the production of snacks for dogs and cats. “We thought that we were buying a production system," said Managing Director Dirk Wellen. "In reality it was just a pile of steel and a good idea. This idea has been consistently developed. Dosing systems had to be integrated and hygiene had to be improved. We had to master a lot of requirements—the only thing we already knew was how to package at high speed."
In 2000, Rondo Food made the decision to sell its food segment and focus on growing in the pet snack market, and today the company claims expertise as a private label specialist and in pet product development.

Aller Petfood Group reports earnings increase for fiscal 2012
Aller Petfood Group reported earnings of DKK14 million (US$2.5 million) at the end of fiscal 2012, up from DKK9 million (US$1.6 million) in 2011.

Petfood manufacturers challenged to eat their own petfood
At Global Pet Expo in Orlando, Florida, USA, the team at Pet360, online community for pet owners, put representatives from major petfood manufacturers to the test.
The team challenged 12 petfood companies to eat their company's petfood live on camera as part of its "Eat Your Food" series. The "Eat Your Food" series also allows petfood companies to promote the nutritional benefits of their food.
“For the longest time, the biggest decision regarding petfood was whether to purchase wet or dry,” said Jon Roska Jr., vice president of merchandising at Pet360. “Now-a-days, pet owners are faced with a multitude of decisions, and there are a variety of gourmet options to choose from. We want to give brands the opportunity to prove that their food is the highest quality option for our customers’ pets, and what better way is there to do that than by consuming the food themselves?”

New Zealand raw petfood manufacturer named to Deloitte's Fast 50
New Zealand petfood company K9 Natural Food was named among the top five fastest growing companies in Deloitte's Fast 50 ranking, which the petfood company attributes to huge export growth.
Christchurch, New Zealand-based K9 Natural was named the top manufacturer in New Zealand and top exporter in the Canterbury/upper South Island, New Zealand, region. The Deloitte Fast 50 is a ranking of the top 50 fastest growing companies in New Zealand. K9 Natural Food CEO Calvin Smith said the company's annual export growth climbed 1,875% with increased sales in Japan, Canada, the US and Australia. Overall growth resulted in a 797% increase.
"Sales in the later part of this year have been stronger than the early part of the year. The sales growth has been driven by expanding the domestic distribution network and the launch of Feline Natural cat food. The sales growth for the next six months will be driven by launching the frozen product into North America and Australia," Smith said. "Exports are currently accounting for approximately 70% of total sales at the moment. Our huge export growth was due to the company focusing primarily on export sales. More recently we have looked at the domestic market and have doubled domestic sales in the last six months."
