Extrusion Porosification Technology pilot launches

Clextral, DIANA Pet Food, LIS (Lesaffre Ingrédients Services) and Triballat?Noyal have worked for several months on setting up an Extrusion Porosification Technology (EPT) pilot in Europe. This partnership will soon lead to the creation of a research and development line based in Western France (Cérences?Manche) in the premises of LIS.
EPT is a new drying technology and breakthrough innovation developed and patented by Clextral, a division of Groupe Legris Industries.
This process consists in producing new generation porous powders with improved functional properties (rehydration, flowability, etc.). The applications are extremely varied, and can range from powdered milk to instant coffee, with a wide variety of food ingredients. EPT is used to dry very viscous products and generates 20?40% energy savings compared to the conventional spray drying method.
This collaborative project brings major food industry names, such as DIANA Pet Food, LIS and Triballat?Noyal, together with Clextral. A new pilot will be set up offering the latest advances in a unique intensification technology which has the potential to revolutionize conventional drying methods.
 Starting in 2016, this pre?industrialization pilot line will also be available to other food manufacturers who will be able to perform new product development tests and improve dehydration processes through EPT technology.

TAMU presents 25th annual practical short course on feeds, petfood extrusion

    A one week practical short course on feeds and petfood extrusion will be presented Feb. 1–6, 2015, at Texas A&M University by staff, industry representatives and consultants.
    The program will cover information on designing new feed mills and selecting conveying, drying, grinding, conditioning and feed mixing equipment. Current practices for production of petfoods; preparing full-fat soy meal; recycling fisheries by-products, raw animal products and secondary resources; extrusion of floating, sinking and high fat feeds; spraying and coating fats, digests and preservatives; use of encapsulated ingredients and preparation of premixes; and least cost formulation will be reviewed. Practical demonstrations of petfood, vacuum coating and several other processes will be demonstrated on four major types of extruders (dry, interrupted flights, single and twin screw), using various shaping dies.

Extruder specialist Almex joins Triott Group

    Almex, an extruder and expander specialist, has joined the Triott Group.
    Triott Group, parent company of Ottevanger Milling Engineers, Wynveen International, Inteqnion, TSC and PTN, has recently acquired a majority share in the company. The Almex management said they see opportunities to let the Almex business develop further and to enlarge their market in cooperation with the other Triott Group business units.
    For the Triott Group it means an addition of the sixth successful business unit, making Triott another step wider and more complete by adding Almex to its portfolio. Apart from that, new markets may come within reach for the existing business units.
    Jaap and Robbert Veenendaal, the two previous sole owners of Almex, will continue to manage the company's daily business.

KSU offering extrusion short course, petfood workshop

    Kansas State University is offering the 10th Anniversary edition of its annual extrusion short course on August 5–8, 2014, in Manhattan, Kansas.

    "Extrusion Processing: Technology and Commercialization" will cover various aspects of extrusion processing, including technology, equipment, product development and sensory evaluation of new products. Products covered include snack foods, textured soy, breakfast cereal, rice analog, petfood and aquatic feed. Apart from learning about extrusion processing from experts in industry and academia, the short course will also focus on strategic business planning for processing companies with the help of faculty from the Department of Agricultural Economics at Kansas State.
    There will be hands-on and practical oriented lab sessions in which different products will be developed and evaluated both instrumentally and by using a consumer panel. One day of the short course will be reserved for visit to Sabetha, Kansas, which is home to major manufacturers of extruders and ancillary equipment.
    The short course is recommended for technical and managerial personnel in the food, petfood and feed industry and ingredient companies desiring training in fundamentals and operations, entrepreneurs who desire to set up a new extrusion-based food processing business, and researchers interested in updating themselves with the latest practices and trends in extrusion processing. In addition, the short course presents an excellent opportunity to develop useful contacts and network with industry people in the US and around the world who will be present as speakers or participants, according to organizers.
    In addition to the short course, there is an optional one-day petfood workshop being held on August 4. The workshop can be attended as a stand-alone participation or together with the extrusion short course. The Pet Food Workshop will consist of experts speakers from industry and academia in the area of pet nutrition and processing, and will provide the latest information on petfood ingredient trends, nutritional requirements for dogs and cats, specialty treats, sensory evaluation/palatability tests and safety/HACCP issues. It will also include a "capstone lab session" involving formulation exercises for petfood recipes.

University of Alberta gets US$1.6 million for petfood extruder

    The University of Alberta is getting a US$1.6 million Wenger X-115 single-screw extruder to include as part of the school's new animal nutrition and ingredient development program. 
    The extruder processes meats and grains, and is capable of shearing cell walls, cooking, mixing, texturizing and shaping animal feed. Ingredients will be fed into the machine and treated with steam, friction and pressure, then squeezed through a die and cooled. Researchers will work with the industry to test combinations of ingredients, try to make kibble more palatable and healthy, increase its shelf life or improve the color.
    The federal government’s Western Economic Diversification program, the Alberta Livestock and Meat Agency, Champion Petfoods and Elmira Pet Products are funding the extruder’s purchase. The machine, to be housed in the university’s Agri-Food Discovery Place, is a scaled-down version of industrial equipment and will be the only machine of its kind being used for research at a university in Canada.

Extru-Tech, Food Safety Validation LLC complete first full-scale extruder scientific validation study

    Extru-Tech Inc. and Food Safety Validation LLC have completed the industry's first full-scale extruder scientific validation study proving the lethality for Salmonella in the extrusion process for a generic petfood formula. 
    This study was done in a Bio-Safety Level 2 laboratory in Manhattan, Kansas, USA, on a full-size E525 extruder co-located adjacent to the Food Safety Validation lab.
    According to Lee Cantley, managing director of Food Safety Validation: "Under the new Food Safety Modernization Act, petfood companies will be required to demonstrate with specific scientific evidence that their extrusion process eliminates the risk of Salmonella contamination in their entire line of extruded products. This includes representative formula testing as well as a generalized test. Since formula categories are processed using different temperatures, pressures and retention time, and have varying ingredients that present a different environment for bacterial presence and growth, formula category testing is a necessary component of a well-constructed testing program. Petfood companies will also need to demonstrate that the extruded petfood is not recontaminated or cross-contaminated post extrusion."

    The program will cover information on designing new feed mills and selecting conveying, drying, grinding, conditioning and feed mixing equipment. Extru-Tech completes first petfood extrusion safety validation study in killing Salmonella


    Extru-Tech recently completed an industry-first scientific validation study proving the kill/lethality step of the extrusion process in its Level 2 Bio-Safety Extrusion lab in Manhattan, Kansas, USA. Extru-Tech’s scientific validation proved the petfood extrusion system as an effective control against Salmonella.
    Extru-Tech analyzed key operational parameters to consider when scientifically validating a typical extruded petfood process:
    • Equipment scale – Production rates
    • Equipment configuration – Barrel screw stack-up, preconditioner paddle configuration
    • Formulation
    • Product specification

    Extru-Tech then reviewed the possible paths for validation of a typical petfood process in order of preference and viability:
    • Pilot plant – Most accepted and least risk
    • In-plant surrogate
    • In-plant pathogenic
    • Laboratory validation
    • Scientific Literature – Least accepted and most risk

    “Extru-tech is using actual equipment that you would find in most petfood plants in a bio-hazard laboratory or a pilot plant,” said Jim Marsden, PhD, regents distinguished professor at Kansas State University. “Raw materials can be inoculated with Salmonella or other pathogens and the effect of the extrusion process can be exactly quantified. This process is a breakthrough for the petfood industry.”
    Based on the design criteria, a BSL-2 pilot plant was outfitted with an E525 production-scale extruder system and the equipment was configured for the production of an industry-generic, low-moisture, dry-expanded petfood. The E325s typically used produce 200 to 600 pounds of petfood per hour, whereas the E525 chosen can produce nearly 8,000 pounds per hour (in terms of typical petfood). The industry-generic petfood formula selected was charged with a 3 serotype cocktail of Salmonella, an inoculant that represents typical contamination events in the manufacturing process.
    All three replications of the challenge study resulted in a log reduction of Salmonella that exceeded the 5-log reduction requirement of a CCP allocation. Extru-Tech also discovered that many readily available and scientific methods of inoculation rendered a result that was not truly representative of a contamination event because of the method by which the raw material was inoculated.
    “Extru-tech is documenting the parameters that are required to deactivate Salmonella in the extrusion process,” said Dr. Marsden. “There are other production steps that follow where Salmonella could recontaminate the product. Extru-tech is looking at those additional steps to identify interventions that could be applied downstream to prevent recontamination.”

Petfood extrusion workshop to be held at Food Processing Center in Nebraska


    The Food Processing Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will present an Extrusion Workshop specifically designed for the food and petfood industries, October 15-17.
    The three-day, hands-on workshop will provide an introduction to extrusion theory and techniques with lectures and pilot plant exercises that emphasize real-world product development for the food and petfood industries. Experts from extrusion equipment manufacturer Wenger along with University of Nebraska faculty and staff will present workshops on extrusion.
