JBS USA launches CoppersClassics.com

JBS USA has launched CoppersClassics.com, an interactive website that highlights its premium pet chew program. The website serves as a resource for consumers who desire all-natural, American-made dog chews.
“With more than 83 million Americans owning at least one dog, there is a growing demand for all-natural, American-made and sourced dog chews,” said Rebecca Greene, pet development manager at JBS USA. “CoppersClassics.com provides an exciting opportunity to reach this growing consumer base and provide additional selling resources for our valued customers.”
Consumers continuously ask for all-natural, American-made products for their four-legged friends. Copper’s Classics fulfills that desire by delivering single-ingredient, minimally processed treats with raw materials obtained solely from USA-harvested animals.
“Throughout website development, we focused on presenting the attributes of our USA-made and processed pet chew program in a fun and interactive way,” Greene said. “The website provides our clientele access to our online store, which allows them to order a variety of chews for their homes and stores.”

Non-rawhide dog chew wins Pet Food Category

DreamBone’s non-rawhide, healthy, and highly digestible dog chew has won the Pet Food Category in the Grocer New Product Awards 2015. The Grocer leads the market as the UK’s only paid-for online service and weekly magazine with coverage of the whole fast-moving consumer goods sector.
Each year, The Grocer New Products Awards celebrate and reward outstanding innovation in the UK FMCG sector in both non-food and food categories. A group of expert judges test a huge array of new products entered, across 34 different categories.
Tested by a panel of dog owners, this “novel and healthy” chew resulted in plenty of happy pooches. Ninety-six percent of testers rated their dog’s enjoyment of it as good or excellent, with many commenting that it kept their dog entertained and had a great taste and texture dogs seemed to find easier to chew. Made with vegetables, grains and chicken, the chew does not contain rawhide.
DreamBone was shortlisted through two stages before making it to the final. The 2015 Pet Food Finalists included: Purina Gourmet Mon Petit – Fish, DreamBone, Pooch & Mutt, Calm & Relaxed, Grain-Free Dog Food, Vets Kitchen Adult Sensitive Grain-Free Pork & Potato.
“We are honored DreamBone has won the Grocer New Product Awards this year,” said Dreambone Vice President of Marketing Maggie Marchese. “It’s a wonderful feeling to hear the incredible feedback from the panel of testers. We’re thrilled to know both pet owners and canines in the UK are embracing the many benefits of our innovative, non-rawhide chew brand.”
DreamBone is the next generation dog chew that has all the benefits of a rawhide chew without the rawhide. Although rawhide chews are one of the most common types of chews for dogs, many veterinarians and pet owners have health and safety concerns with these types of chews. DreamBone dog chews, on the other hand, are made with wholesome vegetables such as sweet potatoes, carrots and peas, in the place of rawhide, and chicken.

New report looks at pet treats, chew in the US

A new report from Packaged Facts shows that 87% of US dog owners and 68% of cat owners purchase one or more types of treats or chews for their pets.
The report, “Pet Treats and Chews in the US,” compiles online consumer survey data from April 2015 and examines the wide array of treat and chew options available to pet owners, as well as what motivates them to choose one treat over another from their  options.
Packaged Facts says that retail sales for treats and chews reached US$5.4 billion in 2014, and that the market is still growing. Because of the recent safety risks associated with recalled jerky treats in the US, pet owners now more closely scrutinize the treats they buy, and interest in natural, locally sourced ingredients has never been higher. Pet owners also are looking for more “bang for the buck” in the form of treats that provide side benefits such as dental care or functional ingredients.
The report breaks out treats and chews into four categories:
  • Indulgent treats
  • Rawhide/natural chews
  • Dental chews/treats
  • Nutraceutical treats
The report provides a broad overview of the market with a focus on future trends, including the importance of product safety, the encroachment of natural products in mass-market outlets, the impact of humanization on the treat market, and growth of functional and grain-free treat options. The report also provides extensive retail sales breakouts along with an examination of the competitive situation.

One Dog Organic Bakery donates 100 bags of treats in May

One Dog Organic Bakery L.L.C. (ODOB) donated more than 100 bags of treats to its rescue partner of the month, bringing total treats donated to more than 200 pounds. The donations during May marks a new record for ODOB.
ODOB owner Veronica Glynn recognized an opportunity to share her love for rescued dogs and her passion for safe, nutritious dog food to help minimize some of this financial burden faced by rescue groups and shelters.
“Both of our pups have been rescued and I estimate that 80% of my customers have rescued their fur family. We believe that all dogs should have access to safe and nutritious food. Feeding your dog something so small as a treat shouldn’t be a life or death decision,” Glynn said.
In February 2015, ODOB launched its K9 Rescue Outreach campaign and had its first rescue signed up less 24 hours later. Scheduling already into April 2016, the program provides much more than safe food to its rescue partners. Every month, ODOB features a Rescue Spotlight on its weekly blog about those who have dedicated their lives to rescuing animals.
When asked how helpful the K9 Rescue Outreach program is to his organization, Tip Burrows, executive director of the Humane Society of Grand Bahama, said: “Extremely helpful. Firstly, treats are a luxury for our shelter dogs. Healthy treats even more of one.”
“I have the best job in the world and being able to make a difference in one dog’s life, something so small as providing a treat to a dog who has never experienced human kindness. It just doesn’t get any better than that,” said Glynn.

Plato Pet Treats gives back with Plato Wags Back program

As part of its mission to provide health and safety for dogs through nutrition, California-based wholesome dog treat maker Plato Pet Treats has launched its first-ever Plato Wags Back program.
With the purchase of a bag of Plato Pet Treats, Plato will provide meaningful financial and product donations to rescues and shelters across the US to help ensure that dogs are treated with love until they find their forever home. Additionally, throughout 2015, Plato Wags Back will directly aid three California rescue-based organizations – Shelter to Soldier, Fresno Bully Rescue and Labsandfriends.org – that either feed and care for homeless dogs or help enhance the lives of veterans who need assistance animals.
Plato Wags Back’s mission is to champion the love and bond between dogs and people by treating every dog with kindness while enabling them to live a safe and healthy life. To make a difference in the lives of homeless dogs, supporters can participate in the program in the following ways:
  • With the purchase of Plato Pet Treats, a donation will be made to animal rescues.
  • Through Dec. 31, 2015, for every new Like on the Plato Pet Treats Facebook page, $1 will be donated to support veterans post deployment. Follow the page to learn about other ways to help homeless animals.
There are close to 7 million homeless pets in the US, with nearly 2.7 million animals likely to be euthanized this year alone. Compelled by these staggering statistics, Plato Pet Treats formalized Plato Wags Back to encourage Americans to help homeless pets and consider adoption.
“Dogs give us so much love and we want to return that love to dogs who need it most,” said Aaron Merrell, co-founder and co-owner of Plato Pet Treats. “From sponsoring dog runs to adopting our first “Plato” canine to be trained as a service companion for a US veteran, we are ecstatic to provide a voice to homeless animals through Plato Wags Back. Our goal is to continue to grow our program year over year to make a significant impact on the pet homelessness epidemic in our country.”
Plato Wags Back Partner Organizations
Shelter to Soldier: A nonprofit organization that rescues shelter dogs and trains them to be psychiatric service companions for wounded combat veterans. Every 63 minutes, a US veteran commits suicide and every 11 seconds an animal is euthanized; Shelter to Soldier works to aid and partner together two- and four-legged friends. Through the Wags Back program, Plato will fund the complete training of one dog (named Plato) at the San Diego-based training school. In addition, every Shelter to Soldier dog adopted will go home with Plato treats.
Fresno Bully Rescue (FBR): A volunteer-based, nonprofit, no-kill shelter dedicated to rescuing Bully breed dogs in the Central Valley of Calif. Because of foreclosures in the state, an overwhelming amount of dogs are being surrendered and Bully breeds are typically the first to be euthanized if no one adopts or rescues them. Plato Wags Back will support FBR’s spay and neuter program.
Labsandfriends.org: An organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing of Labrador retrievers and their “friends” in the greater Los Angeles area. The group’s goal is to find the right family for every animal they rescue by providing education and compassion. Labsandfriends.org is run completely by volunteers, so all donations go toward helping animals in need. Plato Wags Back will be sponsoring one of the Lab runs located at Best Friends Animal Society's NKLA Pet Adoption Center in Los Angeles.

Top Dog Kitchen gets ‘vet recommended’ approval rating

Top Dog Kitchen has received a “vet recommended” approval rating from Dr. Tonya Loreman, DVM, and Dr. Shelley Gothard, DVM, from Sabal Palm Animal Hospital in Naples, Florida, USA.
“It can be a challenge to find appropriate treats for pets with certain medical conditions, and the treats made by Top Dog Kitchen offer great choices for those pets,” Loreman said. “Since Top Dog Kitchen promises simple recipes using USDA meats, we’re pleased to recommend them for healthy pets as well as for those pets that may need a restricted diet.
“Pet treats are not always a necessity but they can contribute to the daily quality of life experienced by both pet and owner. There is value in the simple enjoyment of the treat and treats are usually an essential tool of pet training. We always recommend choosing treats carefully so that the treat does not create a new problem such as an upset digestive system. We’ve now made it official and are placing our ‘stamp of approval’ on Top Dog Kitchen’s line of treats that our patients have loved since 2011.”

'Look Who's Happy' brand canine treats to debut at 2014 SuperZoo

After 28 years of specializing in the catfish and poultry processing business for petfood brands, the co-founders of Big Creek Foods will debut a new canine treat brand at 2014 SuperZoo in July. The Look Who’s Happy brand was created by brothers Jeff and Tommy Gay based on the beliefs that all dogs should be happy and that pet parents deserve to know who’s making the food and treats they feed their pets, according to the company.
The brand will launch 12 SKUs comprised under three product lines: Fetch’n Fillets, Tempt’n Tenders and Happy Wraps. Look Who’s Happy privately owns their manufacturing facility and operates it according to US Food and Drug Administration food safety production guidelines, in addition to meeting far higher standards than what is required for commercial pet products.
Fetch’n Fillets are whole-muscle jerky treats packed with savory flavor made from naturally raised beef, cage-free chicken or grass-fed bison all sourced from the US—the grass-fed venison they use is sourced from a reputable New Zealand supplier. Tempt’n Tenders are made with US-raised, cage-free chicken and are available crusted with carrot, pumpkin, sweet potato or blueberry. Happy Wraps provide two tastes with every chomp since they’re made with US-raised, whole-muscle chicken or turkey fillets wrapped around slices of dry-roasted sweet potato or carrot.

March Dog offers nutria dog treats

Pet treat company Marsh Dog offers Barataria Bites, a dog biscuit, and Bark, a meat jerky, made from nutria, a rodent found in Louisiana and native to South America.
Nutria were initially brought over from South America to be farmed for their fur, and trappers kept the population down. As fur fell out of fashion, however, the animals began to overtake their habitats. Today, nutria are considered an invasive pest and are hunted for population control purposes.
When the Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program announced a grant program for new conservation projects to preserve, protect and restore south Louisiana, siblings Hansel and Veni Harlan submitted an application. Their idea was to process some of the potentially wasted nutria carcasses to make dog food or treats, and they won a small grant. In 2011, they launched Marsh Dog, currently the only commercial seller of nutria meat.
Each step of Marsh Dog's biscuit production is carried out by hand by employees at the company's headquarters, in Baton Rouge, La. Jerky is produced offsite. The company distributes to pet stores, veterinary offices and natural-food shops within a hundred miles. The products can also be ordered online. "I know we can't solve the coastal problem, but we can help educate about it," said Hansel. In 2012, Marsh Dog won the Conservation Business of the Year award from the Louisiana Wildlife Federation.

Milo's Kitchen awarded for home-style dog treats by Nielsen

Petfood maker Del Monte's Milo's Kitchen brand was recently awarded for its home-style dog treats as one of 14 Breakthrough Innovation Winners for 2013 by Nielsen.
Nielsen conducted an analysis of more than 3,400 new consumer product introductions in the US during 2011 to determine which products demonstrated breakthrough results, satisfying three requirements:
    • Distinctiveness - Does it deliver a new value proposition to the market?
    • Relevance - Did this product generate year-one US sales of US$50 million or greater in Nielsen-measured channels (Food, Drug, Convenience, Dollar, Club and Mass Merchandise)?
    • Endurance - Will this product achieve at least 90 percent of year-one sales in year two?

Milo's Kitchen dog treats achieved year-one sales of more than US$75 million and year-two sales of US$100 million.
"We really felt that we had the chance to transform a category and build a powerful new brand. This meant doing the media campaign, putting the team on a plane to meet with our channel partners, executing in-store and engaging the sales force. It was all part of a single strategy. There was nothing to hedge, no optional elements," said Geoff Tanner, vice president of innovation for Del Monte, about the launch of the new dog treats.

Japanese company stops sales of pet treats made from endangered whales

A Japanese company has stopped selling petfood made from endangered Icelandic fin whales after a campaign by conservation groups.
Michinoku Farm was previously advertising jerky-like treats for dogs made from the endangered whales imported from Iceland. However, the company removed the product from its website after protests from four groups, including UK-based Environmental Investigation Agency and US-based Animal Welfare Institute.
Michinoku Farm president, Takuma Konno, said the company pulled the treats, despite being legal to sell in Japan. "Dogs are like family members for many people in Japan. We just wanted to sell a wide variety of food for dogs," he said. "Campaigners look at whales as important animals, but we consider dogs to be just as important. Maybe I was ignorant of the debate over whaling, but it's not worth selling the product if it risks angering some people."
Susan Milward, executive director of the Animal Welfare Institute, said, "We are extremely pleased to see Michinoku Farm respond in such a progressive, compassionate and prompt manner, and we would strongly urge all other businesses to follow suit and end such sales."

Stella & Chewy's petfood safety process granted patent

Stella & Chewy's, a freeze-dried petfood manufacturer, received an official patent for its food safety process (Patent No. 838317 B2), invented by the petfood company's founder and chairman, Marie Moody, and food safety scientist, Dr. James Marsden.
This patent was granted for the food safety process that combines high-pressure processing with an environmental pathogen-reducing treatment system, which continually sanitizes food-contact surfaces with cleansing plasma, safely and effectively destroying environmental pathogenic bacteria.
According to Marsden, professor of food safety at Kansas State University: “Under the Food Safety Modernization Act, the Food and Drug Administration will likely require all petfood manufacturers to develop and implement a written food safety plan for review and approval by FDA. These food safety plans will include HACCP-based, validated interventions to eliminate and control harmful bacteria and other food safety hazards. For the raw petfood industry, this means that their processes must be designed to eliminate harmful bacteria during the manufacturing process.
"Stella and Chewy’s has already met this challenge through the implementation of its patented food safety process in which the raw materials for petfood diets and treats are subjected to high-pressure processing," Marsden continues. "HPP is an intervention that has been scientifically validated as a means to control Salmonella, Listeria monocytogenes and pathogenic strains of E. coli. This technology allows for the destruction of harmful bacteria in raw foods without using heat, irradiation or chemicals.”
