Arenus launches natural pet health, nutrition products for dogs, horses

Arenus, whose parent company is Novus International, launched a line of health and nutrition products for dogs and horses in March at 2011 Global Pet Expo in Orlando, Florida, USA.
Arenus introduced retailers to its natural supplements, which the company says reflect its commitment to holistic health. The company's new products include: Steadfast, for joint health; Assure, a digestive formula in two different blends; CoatPlus, beef-flavored capsules for healthy skin and coat; and Botanical Animal Flower Essences, targeted to pets' emotional problems. The company says it has been audited by the National Animal Supplement Council and its products have earned the NASC Quality Seal.
“The company saw that pet guardians were searching for safe, holistic, and easy-to-use products that address specific health issues,” said Simone Pophal, DVM, PhD, business manager for Arenus. “We had the expertise to deliver solutions to the marketplace, by offering unique, high-quality products that are backed by scientific data and address common but persistent pet health problems.” 

Groupe Glon expanding into petfoods, equine nutrition

French animal feeds manufacturer Groupe Glon is expanding its business into petfoods and equine nutrition.
This move follows the recent acquisition by Groupe Glon of the company Sopral, which already produces about 20,000 metric tons of horse feed per year and owns the Flatazor brand of foods for dogs and cats. A statement from the group estimates that Sopral and Glon together produced around 20,000 metric tons of petfood in 2010, representing a 10% increase from 2009 numbers.
The new branch formed around Sopral will concentrate on selling through specialty channels. Glon marketing director Yannick Guelho has been named general manager of Sopral, assisted by Philippe Jolivet as deputy managing director.

Canidae offers new horse feed line at World Equestrian Games

As horse owners ourselves, we understand how critical proper nutrition is for the long term performance and health of our horses," said Mike DeNunzio of the Canidae Small and Large Animal Division.

Oxbow Animal Health increases distribution

Oxbow Animal Health's volume of petfood distribution has increased greatly since the company was formed, according to a report by KHAS-TV.
The company was formed in Murdock, Nebraska, USA, to produce horse feed for a local store. As the company grew, Oxbow switched to production of rabbit and guinea pig products, and it now distributes them worldwide. The company's expanded product line includes: food, supplements, accessories and bedding. Last year, the company saw a growth of 16% and expects to see similar results again this year.

FDA seizes ingredients from herb supplier

The American Mercantile Corporation was raided May 7 after FDA investigators discovered evidence of rodent and insect infestation throughout the company's warehouse in March, according to a statement from the FDA.
The FDA proceeded to seize $1.5 million worth of ingredients from the company after it failed to correct the contamination problems. The seized articles include food products such as sarsaparilla, spearmint leaves, cornstarch, sweet orange peels powder, licorice powder, sassafras, and salt, according to the statement.
American Mercantile is the parent company of Herbs for Horses, according to a press release on the Herbs for Horses Web site, which is an herbal product company for the equine and pet market. The ownership affiliation between the company and American Mercantile may prompt questions about whether contaminated ingredients are in finished pet products.
The FDA said there are no reports of illness associated with consumption of the products containing American Mercantile-sourced ingredients.
